“From Sea to Sand” Film Camp Opens in Moynaq

The “From Sea to Sand” Film Camp officially began in Moynaq, bringing together young participants for an intensive programme dedicated to documentary filmmaking, visual storytelling and the cultural landscape of the Aral Sea region. Taking place from 7 to 24 September, the camp provides participants with an opportunity to develop their practical and theoretical knowledge of filmmaking while exploring Moynaq and its unique environment. The first day of the camp focused on welcoming participants and helping them settle into their new environment. Following their arrival, participants were accommodated at the camp and introduced to the programme and the activities planned for the coming days. The educational programme began with an introductory lecture on documentary filmmaking, offering participants an overview of the documentary genre, its visual language and the role of filmmakers in observing, documenting and telling real-life stories. This was followed by a theoretical and practical session on camera work. Participants learned about the main components of a camera, its functions and basic technical settings. The session introduced essential skills needed for filming and encouraged participants to become familiar with the equipment through hands-on practice. The practical part of the day included pair work, allowing participants to practice using the camera together, experiment with basic settings and develop their first filming experience. This first exploration of the location allowed them to become familiar with the environment, observe potential stories and visually engage with the unique landscape that will serve as an important source of inspiration throughout the film camp. The first day marked the beginning of an exciting learning journey, combining theory, practical experience and direct engagement with the territory. Over the following days, participants will continue developing their skills in photography, cinematography, sound recording and documentary storytelling while working towards the creation of their own films.
